Wrexham 2-1 Stockport County (Apr 27, 2024) Game Analysis - ESPN

Wrexham‘s first season back in the English Football League ended on a high on Saturday as Andy Cannon’s 88th-minute goal saw the Welsh club beat fellow promoted club Stockport County 2-1 at the Stōk Cae Ras.

Stockport, who have already secured the League Two  title, finished the season four points clear of second-placed Wrexham, despite their defeat.

Paul Mullin missed the chance to put his side in front after 19 minutes after he created a yard of space for himself in the box with a classy first touch before turning and firing an effort over the crossbar.

Stockport, though, had dominated proceedings in the early stages and were deservedly ahead when Connor Lemonheigh-Evans struck a shot across Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo and in off the post.

The visitors had the chance to double their lead just three minutes later but Antoni Sarcevic couldn’t keep his effort on target after being played in behind by former Aston Villa forward Louie Barry.

Wrexham wasted no time in getting themselves level after half-time as Eoghan O’Connell found Ollie Palmer with a lofted pass which the forward deftly took down before finishing beyond Ben Hinchcliffe in the Stockport goal.

Both sides struggled to create chances as the second half wore on, with Wrexham’s James McLean forcing Hinchliffe into a save in the 80th minute with a shot from distance.

Cannon secured the three points for the home side with a late strike from inside the penalty area, much to the delight of co-owner Rob McElhenney who was present at the Stōk Cae Ras.

Wrexham have already announced a three match “Wrex Coast Tour” in the United States ahead of their first season in League One, English football’s third tier.
