Ugly reason behind shock axing of 21-year-old NBA gun as other teams circle

The San Antonio Spurs’ sudden release of young guard Joshua Primo was related to him exposing himself to women multiple times, according to ESPN.

The Spurs on Saturday (all times AEDT) confirmed the axing of the 19-year old – the No. 12 pick in the 2014 NBA draft – despite recently picking up his $US 4.3 million option for the 2023/24 season.

San Antonio offered no explanation for the shock release nor did coach Gregg Poppovich during his pre-game media appearance.

“I know that you all are surprised by today‘s announcement. I’ve been seeking help to deal with previous trauma I suffered and will now take this time to focus on my mental health treatment more fully,” Primo said in a statement. ”

“I hope to be able to discuss these issues in the future so I can help others who have suffered in a similar way. I appreciate privacy at this time.”

ESPN reports many NBA teams “remain intrigued with Primo’s talent and potential” amid the possibility of placing a waiver claim on him before he officially becomes a free agent on Tuesday, however are still searching for more details on the situation.

NBA sides that wanted to add Primo would need the cap space of a traded player exception to absorb his $US 4.1 million salary this year and would also owe him $US 4.3 million for his 2023-24 contract.

Primo has averaged 5.9 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 1.8 assists across his 54-game career including 16 starts after being the youngest player in his draft class.
