Why Parramatta’s woes run deeper than just a drubbing in Darwin

By Adrian Proszenko

The hole Parramatta are in could be deeper than first thought given the club has notched just four wins all season across the top three grades of football.

The pressure will intensify on coach Brad Arthur if a side he labelled a “part-time footy team” following last weekend’s capitulation to the Dolphins in Darwin doesn’t produce a more spirited performance against Manly on Friday.

Parramatta’s senior players have accepted responsibility for that result, with Clint Gutherson, Junior Paulo and Reagan Campbell-Gillard saying the scrutiny should be on the players rather than the coach.

While the standing of the first-grade team is a concern – it sits in 14th ahead of a tough run that includes Manly, a bye, Brisbane, Melbourne, South Sydney and then Cronulla – so too are the results of the lower-grade sides.

Former rugby league star Terry Hill dead aged 52

In case you missed the news, rugby league legend Terry Hill passed away this week, aged 52.

Hill made 246 first-grade appearances during spells at Manly, Wests Tigers, Western Suburbs, Eastern Suburbs and South Sydney. It is understood he passed away after a heart attack.

Hill played 14 State of Origin matches for NSW and also represented the Kangaroos on nine occasions.

Former Australian representative and Manly player David Gillespie was in the Philippines with Hill at a fundraiser last week.

“Only a few days ago he was fine,” Gillespie said. “He was the life of the party. He MC’d the day and had everyone in stitches – his usual self – and was quite funny and entertained everyone from the afternoon, and that’s the last memories I’ve got of him.

“I stayed a couple more days after that and we had a few beers together the next day.

“We both went over to Manly at the same time. Terry was tough, uncompromising, he was a sledger but he could take it and give it … he was a tough player. He was a great footballer.”

Which team walks away with the win?

Welcome

Good evening footy fans, and welcome to our live coverage of tonight’s game between the Sea Eagles and the Eels at 4 Pines Park.

Just the one match tonight after our triple header on Anzac Day, but a good game it will be.

The Sea Eagles have surged into the top eight, and a win tonight would put them third on the table. As for the Eels, win tonight, and they salvage some of their dignity after their thrashing in the top end last week. Lose, and they could sink to as low as 15th on the ladder.
