Aussie Scott shines, Day fights for title as $31m Genesis battle heats up in third round

Australia’s Jason Day remains firmly in the hunt at the $20m USD Genesis Invitational currently sitting in a tie for second midway through the third round.

Day began the day in the same position after opening rounds of 65 and 69 had him eight-under overall – still well behind leader Patrick Cantlay who starred in the first two rounds with 64 then 65 to sit 13-under.

Day’s round began poorly with a bogey on the second, before an exceptional tee shot on the par-three sixth set up a birdie.

He found the green-side bunker off the tee on 10 but made birdie for the third consecutive round on the par-four hole, and backed it up on 11 with a third birdie to move to two-under for the round and 10-under overall.

Cantlay, playing in the final pairing of the day and one hole behind Day, is currently even through 10 holes after a birdie on the first hole of the day was followed by a bogey on three.

His lead remains at three shots.

Meanwhile former Genesis champion Adam Scott surged up the leaderboard with a four-under 67 following a wild back nine.

Scott rebounded from a first-round 72 to card a 68 in the second round, and continued that momentum with three early birdies on holes one, three, and six.

Two more birdies on ten and eleven had him five-under for the round, but things came undone on the extremely tricky run from 12 to 15. Bogeys on 12, 13 and 15 dropped a trio of shots.

But the Aussie veteran turned it around with a birdie on the par-five 17th and notched his seventh birdie of the round on the 18th with a 33-foot putt.

His four-under 67 moved him to six-under overall, still off the pace due to his poor opening round but with momentum building ahead of the final round.

It’s a strong performance given he is only competing in the tournament following a sponsor’s exemption from Tiger Woods, whose foundation organises the event.
