Steven Fletcher’s late penalty gave Wrexham a vital win against Blackpool on Thursday as the League One promotion hopefuls kept the pressure on their rivals at the top.

Wrexham looked destined for their third straight draw as Blackpool — after opening the scoring through Ashley Fletcher in the third minute before Paul Mullin’s stunning left-footed volley levelled it up — frustrated the hosts despite their superiority at a foggy Racecourse Ground.

But a handball from Olly Casey gave Wrexham a penalty with two minutes remaining, which experienced striker Fletcher dully slotted home.

The result means that — while Wrexham remain third in English football’s third tier — they are just a point behind Wycombe in second, albeit having played more games.

Both Wycombe and leaders Birmingham City also won on Boxing Day.

Wrexham, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have enjoyed back to back promotions in English football and next take on Wigan Athletic on Sunday.
