Sam Short in box seat for gold medal: Thorpe

Five-time Olympic gold medallist Ian Thorpe has just given his thoughts on the Men’s 400m Freestyle Final about to begin.

According to Thorpe, Sam Short is in fine form to make this race his own.

Speaking of Short’s heat swim earlier, this is what Thorpe had to say:

“Amazing swim, he [Short] was out, he led from the get-go and I loved the performance”

Watch this space! The swimmers are stepping out, and the race is just minutes away.

What more is there to say about this race?

Ariarne Titmus against Summer McIntosh and Katie Ledecky.

There’s a big chance this world record goes tonight. It used to belong to Titmus, but McIntosh took it from her in March (3:56.08s).

The talk out of McIntosh’s camp, after heats, is that she’s feeling very sharp. By the same token, Titmus was clinical in her heat. Ledecky might go out fast and take the race on.

My prediction is that McIntosh will go under 3:56 and Titmus will be about a second behind. Silver to Australia.

But wouldn’t it be a great yarn if Titmus could keep her five-year unbeaten streak going!

How many gold medals can Australia win tonight?

There are five gold medals up for grabs for Australia tonight, but can they win them all?

Don’t be fooled by the heats. This will be extremely close.

Aussie Sam Short banged out a personal best of 3:42.44s in the heats and the big question is whether he will have enough in the tank to back that up tonight.

Elijah Winnington is the reigning world champion and is known for his astute race tactics. Australia haven’t gone 1-2 in this event for 20 years since Ian Thorpe and Grant Hackett in 2003.

I think they’ll do it, with Sam Short breaking into the 3:41 club. He’s never won a world title.
