Woods seals mid-year switch as Dragons-Manly swap deal locked in: Transfer Centre

The Dragons’ swap deal that will send veteran Aaron Woods to the Sea Eagles for young guns Viliame Fifita and Alec Tuitavake has been confirmed by both clubs.

Manly confirmed Woods will link with the club for the remainder of the 2023 season with Fifita and Tuitavake heading the other way.

“Manly Warringah Sea Eagles have today signed experienced prop Aaron Woods for the remainder of the 2023 season, effective immediately,” Manly said in a statement.

Cronk lashes Eels ‘crazy’ Gutho call | 00:58

A former NSW and Australian representative, Woods has played 252 first grade games since making his NRL debut for the Wests Tigers in 2011.

The 32-year-old forward has also had previous stints at Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, Cronulla-Sutherland Sharks, and St George-Illawarra Dragons.

Sea Eagles Coach Anthony Seibold welcomed Woods to Manly.

“Aaron adds experience and depth to our middle forwards,’’ Seibold said.

“Competition for spots is something we have worked really hard on over the pre-season and ‘Woodsy’ will certainly add to that.

“He has played for Australia and NSW and he brings that wealth of experience.”

Woods said he was looking forward to joining the Sea Eagles, a club he proudly grew up supporting.

“It’s a strong club Manly. I’m very excited to be playing alongside the likes of Jake and Tom Trbojevic, and Daly Cherry-Evans, the Qld Captain and Australian vice-captain,’’ Woods said.

“And then there is some exciting young players there in Haumole Olakau’atu and Tolu Koula. If I can pass on my experiences to these young guys, then I will be happy.

“I just want to buy into what Anthony Seibold wants to do and help drive the culture and standards at Manly.”

“The Sea Eagles can also confirm the Club has officially released forwards Viliami Fifita and Alec Tuitavake and wish them well in their future endeavours.”

The Dragons also confirmed the move.

“The Dragons are pleased to announce the signings of Viliami Fifita and Alec Tuitavake, effective immediately,” the Dragons said in a statement.

“The pair of 22-year-old forwards will each make an immediate switch from Manly.

Fifita will be added to the Dragons top 30 roster this year and will remain at the club until at least the end of the 2025 season.

“Tuitavake will spend 2023 on a development contract before being upgraded to a top-30 contract keeping him at the club until at least the end of the 2024 season.

“The opportunity to bring both Viliami and Alec to the Dragons continues to build our depth in the forward pack over the coming seasons,” Dragons General Manager of Football Ben Haran said.

“We feel both Viliami and Alec are at an age in which their potential for growth over the coming years is significant and in their own way they each provide a point of difference that complements our current roster.”

The Dragons have also granted Aaron Woods an immediate release from his playing contract to take up another deal.

Woods played 19 games in the Red V since joining ahead of the 2022 season. The Dragons would like to thank Aaron for his service to the club and wish him all the very best for the next chapter of his career.

Woods has played 252 NRL games for the Tigers, Sharks, Bulldogs and Dragons since his debut in 2011.

He has also played 14 Origins for NSW and 17 Tests for Australia, including being a part of a Kangaroos World Cup win in 2017.

Fifita and Tuitavake are yet to debut in the NRL, but are highly regarded youngsters, who will add to the Dragons’ depth.
