Wild weather is set to hit the Melbourne Cup — here’s who it will suit

This year’s Melbourne Cup is looking like a wet one with the forecast looking grim.

Melbourne has been experiencing winter-like conditions and Tuesday is set to be no exception for the 100,000 punters heading to Flemington.

The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a shocker: A 90 per cent chance of eight to 15 millimetres of rain for the Melbourne area.

That comes with the chance of a thunderstorm, and even the possibility of hail in the afternoon.

And the top temperature? A chilly 14 degrees.

Weatherzone meteorologist Brett Dutschke said that the conditions could make it a soft track, and even muddy outside the rails for the punters.

“It’s going to be a very chilly and occasionally wet week, with temperatures five to six degrees colder than average for the time of year, much more typical of August,” Dutschke said, per the Herald Sun.

“There will be enough rain in the lead-up to the cold outbreak to make the track at least soft, possibly heavy.

“Similarly, the grassy expanses of the Flemington lawn could tend to mud in patches and swallow up high heels.”

Horses with form on soft ground will enjoy the weather which was rated a soft 6 last week.

That includes Gold Trip, Stockman, Montefilia and Arapaho.
