‘What’s your excuse now?’: Family feud explodes as Haney’s father takes aim at Kambosos ‘bulls***’

‘What’s your excuse now?’: Family feud explodes as Haney’s father takes aim at Kambosos ‘bulls***’

Bill Haney has taken an almighty swipe at the Kambosos camp, insisting father Jim is “getting behind bullshit” and keeping his son George “misinformed”.

Devin Haney (28-0, 15KO) and George Kambosos Jr. (21-1, 10KO) will be the ones in the ring on Sunday at Rod Laver Arena in a rematch to decide who will be the undisputed lightweight champion of the world.

But it was the fighter’s dads who almost came to blows at the end of the first fight and exchanged words once again at Friday’s press conference.

Bill, who was granted entry into Australia the night before the first fight amid visa issues but has enjoyed three weeks on Aussie shores ahead of the rematch, revealed exactly what he said to Jim as their sons stared into one another’s souls.

“I asked him, ‘What excuse are you going to have now, Jim?’” Haney told foxsports.com.au.

“We raise men. We don’t raise men to have excuses. Women and babies can have excuses, but men can’t. That’s what I told him.

“He’s constantly either encouraging his son or getting behind bullshit when he should pull him to the side and get better. The only way you’re going to get better is by addressing what the problem is instead of putting a band-aid on it.”

In terms of excuses, the Haney camp have listed Kambosos Jr.’s complaints about the referee in the first fight as well as the frustration surrounding the game plan from former coach Javiel Centeno as such.

Despite Bill’s respect for Kambosos Jr.’s standing as a former world champion, he believes it counts for little if he’s “not necessarily conducting himself” like one perhaps should.

“I just don’t think George is getting the right information,” Haney said.

“He is being misinformed in the way he should conduct himself. He is a former world champion and that speaks volumes in terms of what his commitment to the sport is. You don’t get to this level by accident.

“But he’s just not necessarily conducting himself as one.”

The war of words between the dads will no doubt continue to ramp up in tandem with the anticipation for Sunday’s fight.

But George and Devin proved that during a momentary cease-fire in the verbal warfare after the first fight there remains some underlying respect between the pair, even if it’s hard to admit right now.

Keeping with that theme, Bill is keen to break bread with Jim once the final bell sounds on Sunday.

Although that could be easier said than done depending on the chaos that is set to unfold.

“They’ve said a lot of things, a lot has happened,” Haney said.

“But until now, the only satisfaction is if Devin goes in there and whips his ass.”
