Kyrgios focuses on Kokkinakis clash amid Serena hysteria

Nick Kyrgios has declared Serena Williams the tennis “GOAT” as he tries to block out the hysteria of the American’s farewell show so he can focus on his US Open opener.

Kyrgios faces great mate Thanasi Kokkinakis in an all-Australian showdown straight after Williams plays the 1012th competitive match, possibly her last singles clash, of an incomparable career on Monday night (11am Tuesday AEST).

Every one of the 23,771 seats will be filled at Arthur Ashe Stadium, the largest arena in tennis, to pay homage to the legendary 23-time grand slam champion.

Kyrgios knows it will be an emotion-charged night but believes he can’t afford to get swept up in the occasion and says he probably won’t watch Williams’ clash with Danka Kovinic, of Montenegro.

G’day tennis lovers.

Welcome to our live coverage of the first night of action at the US Open.

What a sensational couple of games we’ve got in store to begin with at Flushing Meadows.

First up it’s Serena Williams in her first round match against Danka Kovinić. However, this isn’t just any old first round match for Williams, a 23-time grand slam champion.

This could be Williams’ last match at a slam after announcing she was poised to call it quits from major tournaments after this year’s US Open. Can she conjure some magic to advance to the second round?

Then we’ve got the two Aussie chaps – Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis. Doubles partners and great mates, the pair will be putting their friendship to the side for a few hours to try and advance to the second round.

Williams’ match begins at 9am AEST, while Kyrgios and Kokkinakis will be on after that.
