Tim Tszyu is set to become WBO super welterweight world champion on September 30 — with Jermell Charlo to be stripped the moment he steps in to face Canelo Alvarez.
The WBO announced on Thursday afternoon that Charlo will be stripped of his belt when he faces Alvarez in their Las Vegas super fight.
It means Tszyu, as the interim champ, will be promoted.
The decision also means Tszyu’s next fight, most likely in October, will be a world title defence.

The early favourite is American Brian Mendoza, who is the interim WBC champ.
It is not yet known if the WBC will also strip Charlo. If they do it means that bout would then become a unification world title fight.
Tszyu was at a press conference in Sydney on Thursday where it was announced his younger brother Nikita will headline his first Pay Per View event against Jack Brubaker at the historic Hordern Pavilion on August 23.
