6AM — SURPRISE BOMBER SWAP TO SPARK MONDAY MOVEMENT

Essendon is set to land Melbourne key forward Sam Weideman, reports The Age’s Michael Gleeson.

It’s expected the Bombers will boost their scoring power with the fringe tall, sending a future third-round pick in exchange for the former top-10 pick.

Weideman has long struggled to break into the Demons forward line despite his draft pedigree and brief impressive cameos, most notably his three goals and 24 disposals in the drought-breaking 2018 elimination final win over Geelong.

Essendon is hoping they’ll find similar success with Weideman as they did with Peter Wright, who cost them just a future fourth round pick two years ago in a deal with Gold Coast, then won stunningly won this year’s club best and fairest award.

They are also targeting Will Setterfield from Carlton, who won’t cost more than a third-round pick and potentially even less, while Aaron Francis will head to Sydney in exchange for a third or fourth-round pick.

The Demons will also receive a draft pick from GWS in exchange for Toby Bedford, though they’ve knocked back an offer of pick 44.

The Giants’ next-best pick this year is 19 which they would almost certainly not cough up.

Melbourne is likely to send Luke Jackson to Fremantle in exchange for pick 13, their future first-round pick and a swap of late selections – potentially the Bombers’ future third in exchange for the Dockers’ future second – later on Monday.

6AM — WHAT DEALS GET DONE FIRST?

With free agency officially closed, the remaining three days are all about trades. So which moves are expected to be among the first made?

Gold Coast’s swap with Adelaide for Izak Rankine was all but locked in last Friday, so shouldn’t take long to go through.

Reports stated Rankine will move to the Crows along with a late pick in this year’s draft in exchange for Pick 5, a future third rounder and future fourth rounder.

The Suns have a busy few days ahead as they also negotiate with Geelong over what future selection they receive – likely a second rounder – in return for their Jack Bowes/Pick 7 package in another deal likely to be nearing.

Elsewhere, the crux of the deal that’ll send Jacob Hopper to GWS is also in place, with Pick 31, a future first rounder and Ivan Soldo likely to move to the Giants.

Luke Jackson could get to Fremantle rather quickly, likely for pick 13, a future first and a swap of later picks – though other deals need to happen first.

And North Melbourne and Port Adelaide have agreed to resume talks on Monday over a Jason-Horne Francis trade and discuss whether additional parties need to get involved after the original four-club plan, and even a six-club option, were knocked back by the AFL.
