Top jockey Tommy Berry charged over money, tips exchanges with butcher

Top jockey Tommy Berry has been charged with allegedly accepting money and providing tips to a professional punter, placing his immediate riding future in doubt.

Berry, one of the most popular jockeys in Australia, has been hit with five charges by Racing NSW stewards, including twice for allegedly accepting a consideration from Queensland-based butcher, Zaid Miller, after several races earlier this year.

Berry is expected to defend the charges.

Miller is facing five charges of his own for allegedly engaging in conduct that led to Berry breaching the rules of racing.

The Herald revealed in October that Berry and several other regional-based jockeys had their phones seized as part of the probe, with Jordan Mallyon, Jack Martin, Kayla Nisbet and professional punter Jacob Hoffmann also facing charges.

A date for the inquiry by Racing NSW is yet to be fixed.
