Timing right for Grafton gelding to get last laugh

Timing right for Grafton gelding to get last laugh

His record is far from flash, and he’s hardly been giggling since the last win back in March, but Abrazen Laugh can roar back to form in the final race at Thursday’s Showcase Coffs Harbour meeting.

Across a wide open program, this North Coast-based five-year-old will have to bide his time before attempting to land only a third career win at his 25th start.

A gelded son of Group 1 winner Brazen Beau in the Dwayne Schmidt yard, Abrazen Laugh hasn’t won since a dominant Class 1 showing at home.

And even that took several runs to achieve in the new stable after being transferred up from the Hayes camp in Victoria late last year.

Yet while his record doesn’t make for inspiring reading, Abrazen Laugh has been quietly finding the line in most outings against tougher opposition.

Twice he ran home well in deeper Class 3 company before finishing hard from midfield to be beaten under a length in a Benchmark 58 Hcp only two weeks ago.

That run should see him right at his prep peak for an all-out assault on the bigger Coffs circuit where he can settle back around midfield in a race that looks to have plenty of speed up front.

Despite a race of many chances, the early $12.00 in betting shaped well over the mark for Abrazen Laugh.

Meanwhile, two races before that another runner with a former Victorian interest is set to hit the ground running, stepping out for the first time in NSW.

The Extreme Cat, an emerging four-year-old son of renowned sprint sire Extreme Choice, debuts for Newcastle trainer Nathan Doyle off a 31-week break.

Back in April, The Extreme Cat twice beat all bar the winner in two handy Victorian country efforts for the Maher-Eustace juggernaut.

But after a stint in the paddock, he crossed the border and headed north to his new NSW base before a strong recent trial at Wyong signalled he’s ready to tackle a full field in a Super Maiden Plate over 1005m.
