‘This is embarrassing’: Aussies get ‘absolutely owned’ in horror collapse as Indian star runs riot

It was the innings that simply never got going.

Trailing by 234 runs after India chalked up a total of 400 in their first innings, Australia started as they meant to carry on in the worst way possible as they lost by an innings and 132 runs.

After opening pair Usman Khawaja and David Warner scored seven runs, the Aussies went on to lose five wickets for 45 runs in a horrendous collapse.

Khawaja (5) was the first to go when he edged a Ravi Ashwin delivery to Virat Kohli in the slips.

Marnus Labuschagne, who was one shy of a half-century in the first innings, posted a 19-run partnership with Warner before being trapped LBW by Ravindra Jadeja.

The dismissal was clear as day and although Labuschagne briefly looked tempted to review the decision, he ultimately decided to walk for 17.

Several balls after he was sent packing, Labuschagne was seen on the broadcast still wearing his gloves and helmet under his arm as he watched the action over Alex Carey’s shoulder, evidently frustrated at the manner in which he departed.

Warner then received a lifeline when he was remarkably dropped by Kohli, but he couldn’t take advantage of it and mustered just 10 runs as he got caught trapped LBW by Ashwin.

Barely an over later, Matt Renshaw exited for 2 after he was also caught LBW by Ashwin as was Peter Handscomb (6) only 12 balls after.

India’s star spinner then secured his fifth wicket — no prizes for guessing the method — as Alex Carey was sent back to the pavilion for a quickfire 10 runs off six balls.

Commentator Ravi Shastri was blunt in his assessment of the Australian top half when it came to dealing with spin.

“The top order’s just been dismantled by the spinners,” Shastri said.

“Really no answer for the spinners.

“No respite whatsoever.”

The tail also had no luck dealing with the spin as skipper Pat Cummins (1) edged a Jadeja delivery to wicketkeeper Srikar Bharat while debutant Todd Murphy (2) punched a ball from Axar Patel into the grateful hands of Rohit Sharma.

Pace bowler Mohamed Shami then got in on the act when he sent Nathan Lyon’s (8) leg stump flying to end the spinner’s 20-ball resistance.

Shami then wrapped up the innings when he caught Scott Boland (0) LBW to end the Aussies’ pain.

The reaction to the visitors’ collapse was not kind.
