‘They’ve got that wrong’: Controversy as Wallabies baffled by ref drama

Needing a fast start to have any hope of mounting a second-half comeback, the All Blacks found a hand of god from Sam Whitelock.

Or did they?

The Wallabies, commentators and a lot of the public were left confused when the All Blacks were awarded an early try in the second half to interim captain Sam Whitelock.

The towering lock got up smiling, with Irish referee Andrew Brace giving an on-field try.

Replays seemed to have indicated replacement Wallabies prop Angus Bell managed to steal away the ball on the ground.

But Brace, as well as TMO Ben Whitehouse, disagreed, believing Whitelock managed to hold on with his fingers.

Acting Wallabies skipper Allan Alaalatoa disagreed.

“That’s Angus Bell’s hand?” the prop said, before Brace awarded the try officially.

Former Wallaby and Stan commentator Morgan Turinui said the officials had made a blunder.

“There is a separation of Whitelock’s fingers and they’ve got that one wrong.”
