‘There’s a lot of grind happening’: The state of play after five days of trading
Updated

In this special trade period episode of the Real Footy podcast, Peter Ryan and Scott Spits discuss the state of play midway through trade time as negotiations slow down ahead of next week’s frantic final days.

Repeating the pattern of day four on Thursday, only one player switched clubs on Friday with midfielder Tanner Bruhn officially making his way from GWS to Geelong. In some respects, the reigning premiers have done it again – welcoming another player home two years after the Giants used pick 12 to select the Geelong local in the 2020 national draft.

It adds more grist for the mill when it comes to the debate about the lure of playing for Geelong and living in the region. In this case, it’s in direct comparison to staying with an expansion club in a tough environment with less support for the AFL product.

Scribe Peter Ryan liked this analogy: “It’s like setting up an ice-cream shop in Hawaii and setting up an ice-cream shop in the Antarctic, and expecting them to both perform at the same level,” he said.

“I mean, the one is Hawaii is doing okay, but no wonder.”

Plus there are more predictions on when the dominoes will fall, with a host of players such as Luke Jackson, Brodie Grundy, Jason Horne-Francis and Izak Rankine still to officially be traded.

We also answer your questions, on topics ranging from Sydney’s academy to the idea of a brother-brother draft rule.
