‘That’s a dog shot’: Rivals fume as hit leaves AFL star in hot water

Blues defender Nic Newman could be in hot water having been accused of a “dog act” after catching Lachie Neale on the chin with a stray elbow.

It is hardly what Carlton coach Michael Voss needs after his team failed to back up last week’s big win over West Coast, falling 100-74 to Brisbane on Friday night.

Now the Blues could be preparing for next week’s game against the Bulldogs without Newman, with the incident in question causing both sides to come together in the third quarter.

Round 8

A player was overheard on the broadcast describing the hit as a “dog shot” as Newman clocked Neale on the chin after a boundary throw-in.

“Free kick to Neale and it goes against Newman,” James Brayshaw said in commentary.

“Elbow under the chin. Hard to argue.”

Neale was left visibly hurt by the hit, although he played out the rest of the game as the Lions finished big winners.

Newman’s fate will now be decided by the AFL’s match review officer Michael Christian, with the Carlton defender looking at a potential stint on the sideline.
