Nadal is typically the crowd favourite whenever he plays but his opponent Kubler, from Brisbane, will have plenty of support.
The late-bloomer had a stellar 2023 Australian Open, winning the men’s doubles title alongside Rinky Hijikata – who already advanced into the quarter-finals in Brisbane with a victory over Tomas Machac on Thursday – while winning his first-round match in the singles.
Kubler is one of the highest-ranked players in qualifying for the 2024 event, as it stands.
Tonight’s winner will face Aussie Jordan Thompson in the quarter-finals.
