‘Taken middle stump’: Raiders gun ruined by nutmeg in ‘ugly’ mistake

Canberra Raiders’ fullback Xavier Savage suffered a humiliating blow in Friday night’s clash with the Parramatta Eels, when a Dylan Brown grubber bounced wickedly between his legs, leading to Tom Opacic to score the Eels’ second try of the night.

“That has taken middle stump out of the ground,” Warren Voss said in commentary for Fox League. “Xavier Savage gets a savage bounce that leads to an Opacic try.”

Greg Alexander said: “I knew when he didn’t make a play at the ball, I thought: ‘He was in trouble here, the ball could do anything’ – and that’s exactly what’s happened. Split his legs.”

“Huge moment in this game,” he added.

Savage was making just his 22nd career appearance.

Voss said: “This is an ugly moment for him in such a big game.”

“That was a wicked bounce,” Shane Flanagan said.

However, Savage got one back with a long-range try in the 29th minute. Savage showed incredible speed to dart through the Eels’ line before bumping off Clint Gutherson’s attempted tackle to score.
