Perhaps Craig Carton was onto something.
Weeks after the WFAN host floated the possibility that the 49ers could emerge as a potential landing spot for Aaron Rodgers — should negotiations between the Jets and Packers implode — Tiki Barber echoed a similar sentiment Wednesday.

“All of this little simmering, it’s not even like smoke coming out of this thing, it’s just a little crinkling of flames starting to burgeon up under the leaves about Aaron Rodgers actually going to the 49ers as opposed to the Jets now has some validity,” the former Giants running back said on “Tiki & Tierney,” according to Outkick.

The former North Dakota State product, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury in Week 2, has been the subject of recent trade rumours in the lead-up to this year’s draft, which kicks off from Kansas City next Thursday. Currently, the 49ers are owners of three third-round picks, beginning with the No. 99 overall selection. Rodgers, 39, has been at the centre of trade talks throughout the NFL off-season. The four-time league MVP, who has spent his entire 18-year career with the Packers, stated in March on “The Pat McAfee Show” that he intends to play for the Jets in 2023. In the same breath, however, Rodgers claimed Green Bay has been “kind of digging their heels in” over potential compensation, which remains the sticking point in negotiations with the Jets. NFL insider Adam Schefter recently suggested conversations between parties appeared to have stalled. “There hasn’t been a whole lot of conversation, if any, over the last couple of weeks, going back to the owners’ meetings [from March 26-28],” Schefter said earlier this month on ESPN’s “NFL Live.” At the moment, the Jets hold the 13th overall pick in this year’s draft, in addition to two second-rounders at No. 42 and 43. Should the Jets make those selections next week, Rodgers “then has a decision to make about whether or not to show up to the [Packers] mandatory minicamp in May,” Schefter said. “Do the Packers want him there — when he’s scheduled to counter about $60 million? Do you want to risk him showing up and getting hurt — or do the two sides want to come together and get something done before the draft so Green Bay can go ahead and use the picks now for a player that doesn’t figure to be part of their future?” Quarterback Jordan Love is likely going to be part of the Packers’ future after landing in Green Bay three years ago. Though Rodgers is still a member of the Packers as of Thursday, he’s already practising like a Jet. He was spotted working out with friend and former Packers teammate Allen Lazard this month, weeks after the Jets signed the wide receiver to a four-year, $44 million deal.
