Smith erases five-shot deficit in stunning surge but falls agonisingly short in $4m LIV playoff

Cameron Smith came agonisingly close to securing his second LIV Golf victory but was ousted by Dustin Johnson in the $4 million event in Tulsa.

A birdie on the first playoff hole was all Johnson needed to take home the spoils as he beat Smith and South Africa’s Branden Grace.

It was a remarkable effort from Smith to make the playoff given he was five shots off the lead with nine holes remaining in Round Three.

The Australian star had to be perfect throughout the final round to have a chance at winning the $4 million on offer and he produced exactly that.

Smith did not card a single bogey throughout the 18 holes and instead fired nine birdies to finish nine-under 61 for the day and 17-under par for the tournament prior to the playoff.

He was locked in a three-way tie at the end of proceedings alongside Grace — who also didn’t card any bogeys on the final day in Tulsa — and Johnson.

Johnson almost certainly would have secured victory outright had it not been for a disastrous triple bogey on the 10th.

However, the American star recovered enough to win the playoff with a birdie.

Smith and Grace ultimately finished tied for second after shooting a par on the playoff hole.
