Sea Eagles sweat on Trbojevic scans after latest hamstring issue

Tom Trbojevic will undergo scans on Thursday after another potential hamstring issue has forced the Manly star from the training paddock.

The 26-year-old will undergo precautionary scans with club officials mindful of Trbojevic’s repeated hamstring issues in recent years.

Trbojevic has played less than half of Manly’s games since the start of 2019 (44 from a possible 97) and missed the back half of their 2022 campaign due to a dislocated shoulder.

New coach Anthony Seibold is well aware of the custodian’s importance to Manly’s fortunes after Trbojevic called off an unlikely Kangaroos World Cup bid to focus on pre-season training.

Manly’s 34 per cent win-rate without Trbojevic in the past three years, and offensive output that drops roughly seven points a game in his absence, ranks the Sea Eagles star alongside Johnathan Thurston during his time at North Queensland and Andrew Johns at Newcastle as the most influential players in the modern era.

Trbojevic has had six separate hamstring issues in the past six years and has overhauled his training practices previously in a bid to curb the debilitating issues.

The Sea Eagles have previously invested in sending Trbojevic and former five-eighth Kieran Foran to Melbourne in 2020 to undergo testing with hamstring specialists.

Trbojevic’s last hamstring issue occurred during the 2021 pre-season from what he insisted was a fall in the bathroom and not an infamous late-night sprint through Manly Corso against a stranger.

He returned from that mishap to produce one of the most devastating individual runs of form in recent memory, claiming the 2021 Dally M medal before spending much of last year sidelined again.

Manly’s pre-season begins with a trial match against the Rabbitohs on February 10, with the Seibold era officially kicking off on March 4 when the Sea Eagles host Canterbury.
