Schuster signs three-year extension to remain at Manly

Schuster signs three-year extension to remain at Manly

Manly’s signing spree continues, with the club locking down rising playmaker Josh Schuster for another three years.

The news comes the day after the Sea Eagles announced the signing of Wests Tigers halfback Luke Brooks on a four-year deal, meaning Schuster’s future on the peninsula appears to be in the back row.

He informed the club of his decision late on Monday night. The deal is believed to be worth $2.4 million over three seasons.

Schuster was already contracted until the end of next season, but Manly were keen to secure him before he became a free agent on November 1. The Samoan international has long been linked to Wests Tigers, with the speculation becoming stronger after former Sea Eagles recruiter Scott Fulton joined the joint-venture outfit.

However, Schuster has enjoyed his time on the northern beaches and opted to stay after meeting with his family and agent on Monday night.

Schuster has been partnering Daly Cherry-Evans in the halves this season, but Brooks’ signing will likely push him into the back row. It’s a move Schuster is comfortable with, as evidenced by his decision to recommit until 2027.

While injuries and fitness have limited his 2023 output, Schuster believes he can fulfil his undoubted potential. Only last month, the Westfield Sports High product predicted he could become the best player in the NRL.

“Ever since I was young, I’ve always wanted to do this. I know if I continue to work hard, I will be the best player in the world one day,” Schuster said at the time.

“I’ve always believed in myself since day one. I always believed that one day I would be the best player in the game. I’ve still got a long way [to go] in saying that, I’ve still got a lot of learning to do.

“Lucky we have some senior players I can learn off.”
