Sam Kerr welcomes first child with partner Kristie Mewis

Australia’s most famous round ball athlete has welcomed a son, Jagger.

“Our little man is here, Jagger Mewis-Kerr,” said Sam Kerr in a post shared to Instagram which also features partner Kristie Mewis, a professional footballer from the US. Mewis carried the boy to term.

Kerr, captain of Australia’s national women’s soccer team the Matildas, has had an eventful 12 months.

After missing much of the Matildas’ fairytale 2023 World Cup campaign through injury (though returning in time to score an era-defining goal against England), Kerr was charged with racially aggravated abuse against a police officer for calling him “stupid” and “white” in January of that year.

She was found not guilty in February after a trial.

Kerr, a striker with Chelsea in the UK’s Women’s Super League, has also been battling a persistent ACL injury.

This kept her out of the Matildas for 18 months, an absence during which the side underperformed at the Paris Olympics.

Her return to training with the Matildas in April provided evidence of her enduring star power: 2000 fans tried to get in.

The backflipping superstar’s partner, Mewis, plays for fellow British soccer club West Ham United.

She was part of the United States Women’s national team, which won the CONCACAF Women’s Championship in 2022.

More to come.
