‘Sad day’: Famous club ‘unlikely to field a team’ in Tassie AFL crisis

Tasmanian State League club Glenorchy is reportedly on the brink of being unable to field a senior team this season amid the state’s ongoing AFL participation issues.

The ongoing push for the Apple Isle to be awarded the 19th license includes an argument it would help revive local footy in the state, with participation rates once higher than Victoria, but now only ahead of New South Wales and Queensland.

Adding more fuel to the fire, Tassie journalist Brent Costelloe reported on Tuesday afternoon Glenorchy “is unlikely to field a senior men’s team in 2023”.

Other former players include Roy Cazaly, Jason Akermanis, Rodney Eade, Ben Brown and Jimmy Webster.

But the club has struggled mightily in recent years, winning just seven of their 48 matches across the last three seasons, including going 0-18 in 2022.

The AFL has reached an in-principle deal for Tasmania being awarded the 19th license but federal funding to build a new stadium in Hobart remains the sticking point.
