Rugby, cricket among sports axed for stripped-back Commonwealth Games

The Games will be part funded by Commonwealth Games Australia, with the total budget for the event expected to be about £114 million ($222 million).

The Games will be held at four venues across Glasgow – Emirates Arena, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, the Scottish Events Campus and Scotstoun Stadium. There will be no athletes’ village and the opening and closing ceremonies are expected to be scaled back.

Victoria ditched the Games in July last year when the estimated cost soared from $2.6 billion to almost $7 billion.

The Commonwealth Games were first staged in 1930 as the British Empire Games, and Australia last hosted the event on the Gold Coast in 2018, while Glasgow last hosted the event in 2014.

More to come.
