Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Logan Martin will tackle the most difficult series in freestyle BMX on Saturday to whet the appetite for next month’s Nitro World Games in Brisbane.
The Gold Coaster, who became the first man to win a freestyle BMX Olympic gold medal when he wowed the world in Tokyo last year, will master the Triple Hit ramp at Sydney’s Entertainment Quarter this weekend in an enthralling preview of things to come.
The Triple Hit is freestyle BMX’s biggest progression and offers riders the chance to chain their three best tricks consecutively in what promises to be a thrilling spectacle for fans.
Fox Sports will air Nitro World Games Brisbane – the biggest action sports
event on the globe – while Kayo Sports will also provide additional streaming coverage!
It is a drastically different event to Park – the discipline in which Martin won gold in Tokyo – in which athletes usually chain together 10-plus trick combinations in a 60-second window.
Martin described it as “a rollercoaster on a BMX bike”.
“It’s pretty much three big box jumps all in one line. You have quite a big roll-in and you’re straight into three box jumps, so you’ll see three massive tricks all in the space of 15 seconds which is pretty epic,” the 28 year old said.
Suncorp Stadium will host the Nitro World Games on October 22 and 23 and Martin, a two-time world champion, heads a stacked field of elite competitors including Brandon Loupos, Kyle Baldock, Jaie Toohey and Josh Matthews.
It will be the first time a Triple Hit ramp features in competition anywhere outside of the United States.
Australia boasts a rich history of success at the Nitro World Games, having won 22 medals including 10 gold since its inception in 2016 – second only to the US with 35 medals, 10 of those gold.
Martin finished second in the inaugural Triple Hit in 2016 and won gold in Park in 2018.
“It’s the first time for a Nitro World Games in Australia and it’s pretty exciting that it’s in Brisbane and back inside a stadium with all the events happening in the one place,” Martin said.
“I haven’t won a Triple Hit before. I came second in the first one I competed in and the year after I got knocked out just before the event, on this ramp, so I’m coming back for some redemption.
“It would be so epic (to win at a home event). I go to each event to do my best and hopefully I can walk away with the win.”
