Remlaps Commander eager to follow in footsteps of part namesake

Remlaps Commander eager to follow in footsteps of part namesake

He might not have the natural speed of his older and part namesake, but Remlaps Commander can make his own statement at Tuesday’s Newcastle meeting on the Beaumont course.

In primary ownership with the Palmer family, Remlaps Commander lines up for only his second start, two weeks after he made a more than handy debut at Gosford for the Scone-based Scott Singleton stable.

That day the son of top-notch sprinter Extreme Choice finished little more than a length behind red-hot favourite and impressive closer Captain Bond over 1100m.

Reportedly having trained on well in the Upper Hunter, Remlaps Commander looks set to open his account in a modest Maiden Plate over 1150m at set weights.

The better-known six-year-old stablemate Remlaps Gem by boom speed sire Rubick boasts an impressive nine wins and eight placings from only 22 starts, and has long been considered one of the fastest short-course horses in country NSW, often burying his opposition before they get into the straight.

But while Remlaps Gem rests after a fighting fourth-up midfield finish in the feature The Warra over 1000m at Kembla on Saturday, Remlaps Commander finally tastes the real thing after four improving trials stretching right back to the start of the year.

His biggest challenge is likely to come from rival Scone three-year-old Don’tcha Think who also progresses off a tidy debut when run down late in heavy ground at Muswellbrook three weeks back.

A win for either runner could kick off a big day for Scone stables at the Wine Country Race Club meeting.

The Lou Mary stable will be confident of making it two straight wins with four-year-old Ideel Girl in the Benchmark 58 (1150m) for the girls to open the card.

Then the Brett Cavanough stable pins its faith in promising three-year-old Bonjour Rupert who is also hunting back-to-back wins in the boys edition of that same race.

The rival Paul Messara camp also saddles up Lightfast second-up in that battle before unleashing his best chance in the final race, lightly raced four-year-old Seahaven who resumes for only his third start in a Benchmark 58 Hcp over 1350m behind two quiet trials.
