‘Reece is still young’: Kevvie reveals three in contention to be Broncos’ fullback in 2023

Broncos coach Kevin Walters has revealed star recruit Reece Walsh is no certainty to start the 2023 season as the club’s fullback.

Walters emphasised teen sensation Selwyn Cobbo and England international Herbie Farnworth are both putting pressure on Walsh to wear the No. 1 jersey.

Walsh, 20, is the clear frontrunner given his form at the Warriors saw him picked to play fullback for Queensland last year before injury struck.

Walters said Walsh still has plenty of development to come but added his impact on the group has been immediate.

“Reece is still only a young footballer and learning about the NRL, but he’s been a great acquisition for us,” Walters said.

“His voice has been strong and he’s quite a strong character as well, so that’s been a positive.

“His energy around the place is very infectious… his combinations he’s working in with our spine has been really positive, both in defence and attack.”

Walters chopped an changed some positions at the back end of last season as the Broncos inexplicably missed finals despite sitting fourth after Round 19.

The third-year coach will need his side playing September football next year or his NRL coaching career – which took him 20 years preparation – will likely come to an end.
