Just 15 days after some of the best sprinters in country NSW locked horns in the Tamworth Rush, the club hosts another high class short-course rumble at Monday’s feature meeting.
And backing up from that race where he ran a bold second placing first-up for nearly five months, exciting Scone six-year-old Primal Scream is threatening to go one better in an open handicap over 1000m, although he bumps into a form line that could attract just as much market attention.
While Primal Scream finished between dominant winner Golden Point and ultra-smart local Anethole in that benchmark 84 Rush, a week later another lightly raced seven-year-old laid down his own form marker.
Appalachian, the ex-SA gelding, exploded home to win the BM83 Armidale Town Plate run at Tanworth eight days ago.
In just his third start since switching from the David Jolly stable to Sue Grills, the now local favourite powered home off a six-week break to claim a sixth career win at start 18.
You could argue the strength and depth of that race is not quite in the league of the Tamworth Rush, but Appalachian had something in hand when he surged home in heavy ground from just off the speed.
Now on a track that should improve well into soft range, Primal Scream and Appalachian are likely to dominate betting, but it’s far from a two-horse war.
Powerful Newcastle mare Bullinachinashop looks well placed down in weight after a late finishing effort in the feature Springtime Sprint at Wyong following back-to-back wins up to provincial BM68 level.
And punters can also mount a case for smart local four-year-old Ezekeil who chased home a promising winner resuming in a handy class 3 at Scone.
Meanwhile, seven-year-old Torowoto is gearing up to become a real Tamworth favourite for trainer Craig Martin when he attempts to go back-to-back in a BM66 handicap over 2100m.
The gelded son of 2013 Cox Plate winner Shamus Award hit the ground running at his new stable here 15 days ago bolting in a class 2 over the mile after stalking the speed.
That was his first run in 26 days since transferring down from Queensland, and connections will be quickly targeting a feature country cup if he puts this field to the sword as well.
