Premiership clause that could make Eels star a $1 million man

Star halfback Mitchell Moses will get more than a ring if he leads the Eels to their first premiership in 36 years this season.

The 28-year-old has a bonus in his contract which will see him jump from $900,000 to $1 million-a-season if the Eels win this year’s grand final, according to The Sydney Morning Herald.

It’s a unique clause that is usually reserved for coaches, with Ivan Cleary enjoying a bonus after he coached the Panthers to a premiership.

But broader performance bonuses are common in the game. State of Origin selection will often trigger a bonus clause in a player’s club contract, while others can receive a bonus for reaching a certain number of games in a season.

The most similar clause to Moses’ was Mitchell Pearce’s deal with the Knights. The Herald claims the veteran halfback was entitled to a $75,000 bonus if the Knights finished in the top eight and a $150,000 bonus if they finished in the top four.

Moses took a step closer to his $100,000 payday last Friday when the Eels smashed the Raiders 40-4 to make their first preliminary final since 2009.

The bonus would take him ahead of Luke Brooks and make him the fourth-highest paid halfback in the game.

They take on the Cowboys this Friday in the grand final qualifier and will face either the Panthers or Rabbitohs in the decider.

The Herald reports the premiership clause was negotiated last year when Moses re-signed on a two-year deal with an option in his favour for 2024.

The playmaker is yet to take up the option for 2024 and if he doesn’t before November 1, the door will be open for rivals to table him an offer.
