Carlton suspect star forward Harry McKay suffered an injury to his meniscus when he landed awkwardly from a marking contest early in the match against Port Adelaide.
However, they will need to await scans to reveal the full extent of the knee injury that forced him to be subbed out of Saturday’s win over the Power in the first quarter.
A source familiar with the matter, who was not authorised to speak publicly, said there was still hope McKay could return before the end of the season, but the amount of time he would spend on the sidelines would not be known until scans were assessed on Monday. Depending on severity, a meniscus injury can keep a player out between two and six weeks.
That would be a reasonable result for Carlton as they make an unlikely late-season charge towards finals, with initial fears the injury could have been more serious.
Blues coach Michael Voss said after Carlton’s 50-point win over Port Adelaide that he was optimistic.
“He’s hobbling around in the change rooms … early diagnosis, no [not serious], but we’ll wait until we get the scans,” Voss said.
McKay and Charlie Curnow remain a dangerous combination up forward, though Jack Silvagni filled the void against Port Adelaide kicking a career high four goals in a confidence boosting performance from the resilient 25-year-old.
The Blues will play West Coast at Marvel Stadium in round 19 before a huge match against Collingwood in round 20 on Friday night at the MCG.
