Maroons fullback Kalyn Ponga has ruled himself out of Kangaroos selection for the World Cup next month to instead focus on pre-season training with the Knights.
Ponga told Australia coach Mal Meninga he made the difficult decision due to Newcastle’s horror season.
The Knights captain has struggled with injuries in 2022 – suffering three concussions – as his side won just six games and finished 14th on the ladder.

“I understand the potential opportunities that may be missed by this decision, however, due to the year we have endured, I really want to commit on the upcoming pre-season,” Ponga said.
“My focus will sit firmly with nailing pre-season from the start, and I believe this decision is in the best interest of myself and the Knights.”

The Knights were eager to have Ponga play in Round 25 however the club decided it was best for him to rest for the remainder of the season.
The Kangaroos squad is set to be announced the week leading into the grand final.
Ponga has made seven appearances for Queensland and played 9s for Australia but has never represented the Kangaroos.
