Panthers replace Ciraldo with former Blues player as rising star also joins new coaching panel

The Panthers have replaced their poached assistants with former player Peter Wallace, and Ben Gardiner from the Wests Tigers.

Penrith paid a price for their success and lost assistants Cameron Ciraldo and Andrew Webster to head coaching roles at the Bulldogs and Warriors.

Wallace played 101 of his 240 NRL games for the Panthers and also represented New South Wales on four occasions.

The former playmaker retired from the NRL in 2018 and coached Penrith’s NSW Cup side to a premiership this year.

Gardiner joins from the Tigers where he was an assistant and oversaw one NRL game this season when interim coach Brett Kimmorley was sidelined with Covid.

It was the game when the Tigers were robbed victory over the Cowboys at the death, but he proved a class act in the post-match press conference.

Gardiner has also worked as an assistant coach for the New Zealand Test side and has previously held positions with the Rabbitohs and Sharks.

Wallace and Gardiner will work under head coach Ivan Cleary as Penrith look to become the first club since 1983 to win three straight premierships.
