NRL’s sticky decision as Dragons bosses make desperate bid for Ramsey cap relief

The Dragons have reportedly met with NRL powerbrokers in their desperate bid to be handed salary cap relief for fullback Cody Ramsey.

The 23-year-old has undergone 12 surgeries since he was hospitalised with ulcerative colitis in November last year according to the SMH.

Now the NRL is looking into whether the red V club will be granted salary cap relief and are reportedly sympathetic towards the situation.

As per the NRL’s rules, relief can be granted to a club for a player who is forced into retirement through injury or if an injury has been suffered while playing at a representative level.

Ramsey’s situation doesn’t fit the criteria as it stands and a decision is set to be made on the matter in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the gun fullback is desperate to make an NRL return and attends training and game days when he feels healthy enough to do so.

According to the Herald, Ramsey has had parts of his large intestine removed and has one more surgery before he finds out from medical staff if he will remain sidelined past the 2023 season.

The NRL is in a predicament regarding the salary cap relief and would be forced to make an exemption for the Dragons who are adamant they will pay Ramsey through the tough period and until his contract expires at the end of 2024.

Prior to being struck down, Ramsey was Griffin’s No.1 choice at fullback and remains a part of the club’s plans moving forward.

St George Illawarra bosses are reportedly of the opinion they should be handed relief seeing as the illness is the only thing keeping him off the field.
