NRL round 5 live updates: South Sydney Rabbitohs v Melbourne Storm at Accor Stadium

Jack Wighton… future Rabbitoh?

More on Latrell, who has called for another rep star to make the move to Souths next season.

In the same week Jack Wighton turned the NRL player market upside down when he said he would field offers from rival clubs, Mitchell said the Rabbitohs should be a potential landing spot for the Raiders star.

“I would love him at Souths,” Mitchell said. “I would love Jack outside me. It would be another element. But we don’t have a sombrero. I want Jack to make his own decision and do it for his kids and his partner. That’s all that matters – to be happy.

“We would go to that next level. We’re doing all right at the moment but like I said, Jack will make his decision. I have met [Raiders coach] Ricky [Stuart] and he is a genuine bloke. I think they will work something out. Canberra is a really good club.

“[But] I think we would suit him and work around him.”

History against the Bunnies

Since the Melbourne Storm were introduced to the NRL in 1998, they’ve taken on foundation club Souths 37 times.

The Rabbitohs have prevailed on just six occasions.

“They’re always going to be a hit when they come up against us. There’s sort of a rivalry there, I don’t want to mention the [phrase] ‘bogy team’, but they’ve had the wood on us the last few years, so we’re not going to take this lightly at all,” Souths winger Alex Johnston said this week.

“For us to beat them, we just have to be on our A-game, beat them through the middle. Obviously, they’re a tough team, so we’ve just got to roll up our sleeves and hopefully beat them at their own game.”

Munster’s Latrell warning

They’re rivals at club and Origin level but Storm star Cameron Munster and Rabbitohs fullback Latrell Mitchell were World Cup teammates last year and Munster is full of respect for the threat Mitchell poses tonight.

“He’s a player who loves those big moments, most of the time he delivers, and it’s why so many people love coming to watch him play,” Munster said this week.

“He has that X factor where he can create something out of nothing. We have to be on our toes, and hopefully ‘Trell Mit’ is not being ‘Trell Mit’.

“We need to keep a straight line, and if we don’t give him a straight line, it could be a big scoreline.

“We can’t afford to shoot out of the line. As much as you want to take his time and space away from him, that’s when he thrives – you can’t create those triangles [in defence] for him because that’s when he gets through the gaps.”

Welcome to a Friday night blockbuster

Hello and welcome to tonight’s coverage of South Sydney’s round 5 clash against Melbourne.

It’s already been an emotional week for the Rabbitohs, who downed Manly by a point last week and have also farewelled club legend John Sattler, and they’ve got another big match tonight against perennial powerhouses the Storm.

Melbourne haven’t quite been their usual selves so far this season, suffering back-to-back shock losses to the Bulldogs and Titans before last week’s win over the last-placed Wests Tigers.

They’ll need to lift another level to get the better of Souths, and will again be without suspended halfback Jahrome Hughes.

Kick-off is at 8pm, so stay tuned for our live updates.
