Patrick Mahomes is breaking records again.
On Monday, NFL Media reported the Chiefs QB restructured his contract in a move that will pay him $210.6 million ($A327m) between 2023 and 2026, with the guaranteed sum the most ever over a four-year period.
Mahomes remains under contract through the 2030 season, and the team will revisit the deal after 2026, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
The QB signed what remains the largest contract with its $US450 million ($A700m) value in 2020, though the average annual pay over its 10-year duration was surpassed by the likes of Lamar Jackson, Jalen Hurts, Justin Herbert and Joe Burrow.
Burrow, the Bengals star, inked a five-year extension worth an average of $55 million per year before the 2023 season began.
With his reworked deal, Mahomes went from being the eighth-highest paid QB to the second-highest behind Burrow at $52.6 million — just ahead of Herbert’s $52.5 million average.
He’s not been shy about reworking his deal to help the team find cap space — something he did in 2021 and ahead of 2023 — saying he’d prefer to win titles over being the highest-paid player.
“It’s not about being the highest-paid guy; it’s not about making a ton of money,” he said in May. “I’ve made enough money where I’ll be set for the rest of my life. But at the same time, you’ve got to find that line where you’re making a good amount of money but you’re still keeping a lot of great players around you so you can win these Super Bowls and you’re able to compete in these games.”
At 28, Mahomes has won two Super Bowls — winning MVP of the game both times — to go with a pair of NFL MVP awards in his six-year career.
The No. 10 overall pick out of Texas Tech in the 2017 draft, he led the Chiefs to a 17-9 win over the Jaguars on Sunday, bringing Kansas City’s record to 1-1 on the season.
