NFL chaos as Aaron Rodgers injured in opening drive of blockbuster Jets debut

Aaron Rodgers’ highly-anticipated New York Jets debut against the Buffalo Bills has started in disastrous fashion, with the star quarterback signing injured in his opening drive of the clash.

Rodgers was helped off the field after being injured in a sack by Buffalo’s Leonard Floyd in the opening five minutes, with the four-time NFL MVP limping into a medical tent for an assessment.

The 39-year-old was carted to the locker room soon afterwards.

Jets coach Robert Saleh told ESPN after the first quarter: “He’s dealing with an ankle right now, we’ll get it checked out…”

But Rodgers was ruled out during the second quarter, despite X-rays taken in the stadium not showing any broken bones.

It was a nightmare start for the Jets, seeking to return to the Super Bowl for the first time since Jan. 12, 1969. Rodgers spent the first 18 seasons of his career with the Green Bay Packers, winning the Super Bowl in 2011, before being traded to the Jets for a bevy of draft picks in April this year.

Just minutes earlier, Rodgers had raced onto the field at MetLife Stadium, carrying a USA flag and earning raucous applause.

But by the fifth play of the season, the Jets were forced to turn to backup quarterback and last year’s starter Zach Wilson, who immediately went 2-for 2 passing before the Jets punted the ball away.

Rodgers had attempted just one pass in the four snaps before his injury, which was incomplete.
