‘My journey ends’: Concussions force Pucovski to retire from cricket

Victorian and Australian batsman Will Pucovski has announced his retirement from cricket after a long battle with concussion.

Pucovski, who played one Test for Australia in 2021, has confirmed that his time as a cricketer is over after suffering another blow to the helmet in March last year while playing for Victoria.

Pucovski has not played since then and his retirement was always expected.

The 27-year-old announced the news on Gerard Whateley’s radio program on SEN, saying it was a “humongous disappointment that is hard to deal with”.

“I wish I was coming in maybe under better circumstances,” Pucovski said. “I’m not going to be playing cricket again. It’s been a really difficult year to put it as simply as possible.

“I’d need a few hours, I think, to take you through the whole journey … but the simple message is I won’t be playing cricket at any level again.

“There’s been an illustrious group of one-Test players. Unfortunately, that’s where my journey ends.”

Pucovski, one of Australia’s brightest young batting talents, made scores of 62 and 10 on Test debut against India at the SCG in 2021. He made 2350 first-class runs at an average of 45.19.
