Broncos coach Kevin Walters has taken a cheeky dig at Selwyn Cobbo following the star’s hat-trick in the Indigenous All Stars’ win.
Cobbo overcame a shaky start to Saturday’s clash to score three tries in 12 minutes and play a crucial role in the Indigenous side’s first win since 2019.
It was the start to the year that the 20-year-old needed after making headlines for his infamous comments about Walters on a podcast.

“He’s a good person, like a good bloke but I don’t think he’s a good coach. He’s not the best coach but he’s all right,” Cobbo said on the Back of 135 podcast.
Walters said at the time that Cobbo’s “disappointing” comments “certainly did” hurt — and took a swipe at the young winger, who was fined $15,000 by the Broncos, after the club’s trial game.

Walters was asked about Cobbo’s All Stars performance following the 24-all draw with the Titans.
“Yeah it was great to see Selwyn do that … he has been well coached,” he said with grin, per News Corp.
“He is improving all the time.
“Selwyn showed some good skills again in that area, so he must be getting some good coaching I would have thought.”

It’s not the first time Cobb has slipped up — he was fined for driving without a licence last year and was also late to a captain’s run when the season was on the line.
The pair have spoken about the podcast incident with Walters telling News Corp: “I know he didn’t mean what he said… We’ve both moved on.”
Walters is confident that Cobbo is “much more settled and mature” this year and pointed to his All Stars performance as evidence.

“We don’t just teach Selwyn that, we teach all of our players that and some take it in quicker than others,” Walters said in reference to Cobbo bouncing back from a couple of early errors.
“He showed his real class in that last quarter.
“From what I have seen so far, Selwyn is much more settled and more mature than this time last year.
“We can’t fault him in pre-season, he had a hiccup off the field last year, but this year he has been on time, ready to go and next week we will get a glimpse of what he is capable of for the Broncos in season 2023.”
