MotoGP madness sees title race swing as leader crashes out, challenger stuns with 17-year first

Italy’s Francesco Bagnaia won the Indonesia MotoGP on Sunday with a spectacular ride that took him back to the top of the championship standings after rival Jorge Martin crashed out.

Maverick Vinales (Aprilia) came in a close second behind the Ducati star, with Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) in third at the Mandalika circuit on the Indonesian resort island of Lombok.

Bagnaia, starting 13th, became the first rider to win a dry Grand Prix from outside the front four rows since Turkey 2006 in remarkable scenes.

Martin was leading both the race and the championship when he spun into the gravel, his team reacting in shock and anger.

Bagnaia then continued his charge and took the lead with a third of the race remaining, refusing to relinquish it after a late challenge.

Aussie Jack Miller was running as high as fourth before dropping down the order.

The next race is the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island in a week’s time.
