Mother of Eagles player missing after horrific WA boat crash

A major search continues for the mother of a young West Coast Eagles player after she fell from a boat following a horrific crash that killed one person and left another in hospital.

Both 9 News Perth and The West Australian reported on Sunday night the search is continuing for Kylie Bazzo – the mother of Eagles defender Rhett Bazzo – almost 24 hours after Western Australian Police were called to an area near Pinjarra Road and Soldiers Cove Terrace in Mandurah, south of Perth.

Four people were on board a boat when it reportedly collided with a red post marker in the Mandurah estuary. Two women were thrown from the boat following the crash.

Deborah Burdon – a friend of Mrs Bazzo’s – was recovered from the water, however she died at the scene. Deborah’s husband John Burdon, who was believed to be driving the boat, was taken to the Royal Perth Hospital with serious injuries.

Initially, police confirmed on Sunday afternoon the woman had been found dead but have since announced the search continues.

A second man, 54, was also on the boat at the time of the crash but was uninjured.

Duty Inspector Vic Hussey told the ABC on Sunday that police were searching the water for others who were possibly missing.

“We are currently searching the water potentially for at least one person that may be missing from a vessel that was involved in a collision,” he said.

“Regrettably there is one person that is deceased as a result of this collision.

“We are aware of the fact that potentially the boat has hit a navigation marker or something similar.”

WA Police acting Superintendent Peter Morrissey said due to the size and scale of the search, it was unlikely Mrs Bazzo was still alive.

“We’ve done land-based searches and water-based searches and at this stage, we’re probably in a space where we’re looking to recover the body,” he said.

Rhett Bazzo and sister Kameron tragically lost their father, WAFL great Steve Bazzo, to cancer when they were young children.

“My family has given up a lot of things to make sure I can try and live out my childhood dream and I know my Dad would be looking down on me proud,” Bazzo told reporters after he was drafted by West Coast with Pick 37 in the 2021 draft.
