Of all the well-fancied chances from Tamworth’s leading stable at Thursday’s Showcase meeting, a talented and lightly raced five-year-old can make a powerful statement in his second run in the region.
Seguso from the Cody Morgan team lines up in the feature Tamworth Country Music Cup over 1200m having missed by a whisker first up at Warren in a good benchmark 84 sprint in November.
That was Seguso’s first outing for 10 months after being transferred from the Graham Begg yard at Cranbourne and has been given plenty of time to acclimatise to his new surroundings.
Seguso has two wins and five placings from 10 starts, and his raw ability was on show right from the start.
Coming off an injury-enforced lay-off after debuting nine months earlier, Seguso weaved through traffic from near last for a spectacular maiden win at Moonee Valley. He went close in two subsequent runs at Sandown before being spelled but returned with a dominant class 1 win at Geelong late in 2021 as a four-year-old.
Seguso was soon tackling higher grade metropolitan Saturday fields, but his sometimes wayward style and a bad knack of finding trouble went against him, and by last March he was back in the paddock.
In the winter of 2022, he was booked for a new home in north-western NSW, and the move looks set to bear fruit in this assignment. Morgan has a powerful hand in the meeting, starting with dominant early favourite Satay Chicken in the opening maiden before sprinters Smart Shot in a heat of the Rising Star, and Ostracised in a class 3 resume.
The meeting kicks off a terrific four weeks for the New England club, including a Saturday meeting on January 28 and the Country Championship card on February 10.
