Melbourne cause massive boilover, upset Lions at the Gabba

Melbourne have pulled off one of the upsets of the AFL season, running over the top of the Brisbane Lions – the AFL’s reigning premier – on their home turf to record a 10-point win.

The Demons trailed by 14 points at three-quarter-time and were 15th on the ladder, but finished strongly to beat the second-placed Lions 14.14 (98) to 13.10 (88) at the Gabba.

As has become a theme this season, skipper Max Gawn was imperious in the ruck for the Demons. He has 22 disposals and 47 hitouts, while Jake Melksham kicked four goals and Kysaiah Pickett was busy, if a little inaccurate in front of goal with two goals, four behinds.

The loss confirms the Lions are in a lull after an ominous start to their premiership defence. They’d won seven of their first eight games and were on top of the ladder before escaping with a draw against lowly North Melbourne last week in Tasmania. Despite those results, the Lions will sit second on the ladder at the end of round10.
