Glenn Maxwell is out of cricket for up to three months after breaking his leg in a freak accident at a friend’s 50th birthday party in Melbourne on Saturday night.
After attending a Melbourne Stars event during the day, Maxwell attended the evening party and was running around the tennis court of the house with the person celebrating their birthday when both tripped and fell, with Maxwell’s leg trapped under the other person.
As a result, Maxwell suffered a fracture to his left fibula, which was operated on on Sunday afternoon. A successful surgical procedure has reset the leg, but Maxwell is expected to be out of action for between eight and 12 weeks.
The mishap took place early in the event and neither party was intoxicated at the time.
“Glenn is in good spirits. It was an unfortunate accident and we feel for Glenn in the circumstances given he was in great touch in his last few games,” national selection chair George Bailey said.
“Glenn is a critical part of our white-ball structure and we will continue to support him through his recovery and rehabilitation.”
Maxwell’s injury follows a sequence of other bizarre injuries for prominent players. England batter Jonny Bairstow missed out on the Twenty20 World Cup after breaking his leg while playing golf in the UK. Josh Inglis, Australia’s backup wicketkeeper, also missed the Cup after a golf club snapped prior to the event, causing serious injuries to his hand.
Sean Abbott has been called into the ODI squad to replace Maxwell.
