Former Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matić has hit back at goalkeeper André Onana, saying he is “statistically one of the worst goalkeepers” in the club’s history.
United face Matić’s Lyon on Thursday in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal tie, and Onana had suggested that United were far superior to Lyon — a notion that Matić made clear he disagreed with.
“You need to have cover to say something like that,” Matić told a news conference on Wednesday.
“Onana… I respect everyone but… if you’re one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history then you need to take care with what you’re talking about.
“If David De Gea or Peter Schmeichel or [Edwin] Van der Sar said that then I would question myself. But if you are statistically one of the worst goalkeepers in Man United history then he needs to show that before he says it.”
