Maguire on the chopping block as Kiwis old boys issue NZRL board big Origin warning

The New Zealand Rugby League are reportedly considering sacking Michael Maguire following a push from a powerful group of ex-players.

The Daily Telegraph is reporting the NZRL board will make reportedly a decision in his future in the coming weeks, with Maguire set to front the panel.

NZRL CEO Greg Peters confirmed Maguire will be given a chance to outline his case to remain as Kiwis coach whilst also taking over as NSW head coach.

The group of former New Zealand representatives believe becoming an Origin coach promotes Australia’s rugby league talent, the Kiwis’ fiercest international rival.

Nathan Cayless or Stacey Jones are reportedly being viewed as the leading options to take over as head coach of the national team.

Cayless is currently Maguire’s assistant while Jones is a revered figure within New Zealand rugby league circles.

Peters explained that the board meeting scheduled over the next few weeks.

“It will be either this week or the following week, it will come down to the board meeting,” Peters said to News Corp.

“Michael will have some things to say to the board.

“The board will consider a number of views that have been expressed and also the current playing group and also Michael. “There are a number of factors that the board will consider when it makes its final decision.

“We love Madge (Maguire), we’re not considering options at the moment.”

Maguire’s appointment as NSW coach has reportedly been delayed out of respect for the NZRL board, allowing them to resolve their situation.

The moves comes after the Kiwis smashed the Kangaroos 30-0 in the Pacific Championships final.
