Magpies board candidate blasts lack of ‘support’ for De Goey, wants games at Marvel scrapped

Eligible Collingwood members have 11 candidates to choose from to replace outgoing board member Mark Korda.

The Pies confirmed on Thursday the group of nominees who had come forward, with the result to be ratified at the club’s Annual General Meeting on December 15.

After the club initially endorsed him for the role, music executive Dan Rosen withdrew from the race last week, with no other preferred candidate appointed by the club.

It means the board position will be decided by an open vote with no preferred candidate.

Among the nominees is former Collingwood player and the club’s past players’ president Paul Tuddenham, who is looking to become the second active board member to have played for the club, joining vice-president Paul Licuria.

Another – lawyer Matthew Ganley – told foxfooty.com.au he believed the Jordan De Goey saga was poorly handled by the club in the wake of a video of him in Bali during the Pies’ mid-season bye.

“I have a strong sense of justice and loyalty to our players and people and will ensure that nobody is left at the mercy of a media pile-on like we saw with one of our players post-Bali this year, where we could have done more to support our player,” he said.

“I will push back on calls for knee-jerk fines, suspensions and removals of contract offers until the end of the year just because the media demands it.”

Ganley will also push for Collingwood to scrap any home games away from the MCG, seeking to renegotiate existing arrangements now that Marvel Stadium is an AFL-owned stadium.

The long-time club member added he would try to bolster the club’s list management department in a bid to mirror reigning premiers Geelong.

Returns for Brodie Grundy and Ollie Henry in this year’s trade period, Ganley said, were “underwhelming”, while the prospects of the election were rare.

“With no endorsed candidate, an open election gives Collingwood members a unique opportunity to elect a board member who best embodies the values they want to see at CFC,” Ganley said.

“With the board already well represented in terms of a past player and strong business interests, I believe my strong governance skills acquired from my legal background gives me a strong point of difference to what we already have on the board.”

The election will open on November 18.

Nominees are: Dianne Kaminski, Theo George, Christopher Macdonald, Amanda Cameron, Sean Callanan, Kiriakos (Gary) Thomaidis, Constantine Frantzeskos, Matthew Ganley, Sal Perna, Paul Tuddenham, Daniel Taft.
