Michael Maguire has revived his NRL career after signing on as Canberra’s senior consultant for the next two seasons.
Maguire was sacked by the Wests Tigers during the year after joining them in 2019 and enjoyed little success during his time at the club, which finished 2022 with their first wooden spoon.
The decision comes as Maguire aims to lead New Zealand to World Cup success in the UK, which means he won’t begin his new role until the tournament is over.
Maguire played 11 matches for the Raiders and famously led the Rabbitohs to premiership glory in 2014 after a successful stint with Wigan in the Super League.
It’s the second major coaching announcement to come out of the capital following the decision to appoint Darrin Borthwick as Canberra’s inaugural NRLW coach.
“Michael is a wonderful signing for our club and he brings valuable experience and knowledge to the role,” Raiders NRL coach Ricky Stuart said.
“He has a wonderful record as a coach at all levels of the game and we’re very fortunate to be able to secure someone of his calibre.
“I can’t wait to work with him and have him working alongside our coaching staff and playing group.”
